Restorative Dentistry
Restorative dentistry in Fergus Falls, MN focuses on repairing or replacing your teeth. Although there is some overlap with cosmetic dentistry, the procedures serve different purposes. Whereas restorative dentistry seeks to improve function, the primary purpose of cosmetic dentistry is to improve appearance.
Examples of Restorative Dentistry
Below are the most common types of restorative dentistry procedures we perform at Northern Lakes Dental and Implant Center.
Crowns
Dental crowns disguise minor cosmetic issues like chips and hairline cracks while also strengthening the tooth and saving it from extraction. Dr. Scott Wagnild or Dr. Kell Schroeder remove a portion of your tooth’s enamel and structure to ensure that the crown will fit snugly over the tooth. Most crowns stay in place for several years before the bonding material comes loose and needs replacement.
Fillings
When plaque and tartar remain on your teeth for a long time, they break down into bacteria that cause tooth decay. Dr. Wagnild or Dr. Schroeder start the procedure by administering anesthesia and then removing the decayed portion of your tooth with a dental drill. Your dentist then applies filling material to the small hole in your tooth to guard against future infections.
Implants
The process of receiving dental implants is longer than getting either dentures or dental bridges because implants replace the tooth and its roots. During the first part of the procedure, Dr. Wagnild or Dr. Schroeder install implant posts in your jawbone that replace the roots and bones of your tooth. Approximately 12 weeks later, you return to our dental practice to have the artificial tooth and abutment attached above your gumline. The abutment connects the replacement tooth to the implant post underneath your jawline.
Besides improving your oral health, the primary goals of restorative dentistry are to chew, eat, and speak as efficiently as possible. We also work to eliminate your dental pain, reduce the need for future dental work, and improve the appearance of your smile by restoring your teeth to their proper function.
Root Canal Therapy
Bacteria can cause inflammation inside of a tooth that develops into pain in its pulp and nerves. Some of the indications that you may need a root canal include small pimples on your gums with or without pus formations, chronic bad breath, and sensitivity when consuming hot and cold foods or beverages. Since these represent only a few of the most common symptoms, please do not hesitate to get in touch with us if you have any new symptoms with your oral health.
